Rubber Mulch

A great alternative to organic mulch material, such as wood chips, is rubber mulch. While researchers have found that organic mulch is considered "low quality" food for termites, termites can get in it, and so you need to keep those wood chips away from your house. Also, keep in mind that mulch that goes right up to the house will hide evidence of termites, such as frass, so leave some concrete showing to help you keep an eye on things.

Rubber mulch comes in different sizes and colors, so you can use it for gardening, play ground areas, and even for horse arenas. This mulch is made from recycled tires, so you can feel like you're doing something for the environment. It's not cheap, but it can last for some 20 years.
