Should Landlords Have to Check Passports?
An interesting problem is arising now that some American cities are trying out another way of controlling the illegal immigrant population. The idea of forcing landlords to verify whether or not renters are residing in this country legally is perhaps not that much different from that of having employers do so when hiring someone. But there are those who would argue that pushing illegal aliens out onto the street when they already often live in less than posh (and sometimes outright dangerous conditions) is going too far.
An additional issue that I think that some people are forgetting is that the legal and illegal populations are very much interrelated and living together. What happens when children who are citizens live with and depend upon parents who are undocumented? Do you throw them out onto the street with their parents?
