Aquafina and Dasani Are Out of the Tap
So the news is out that Pepsi has agreed to put the source (public or tap water) for their "purified" water Aquafina on the label. Coke, which sells Dasani, like Pepsi, is saying that consumers have known all along, but I'm not sure of that. After all, when the label just says "purified," it would be reasonable to assume that the company selling the item has done the purifying. When it turns out that a city actually made the water safe to drink, and the company only made it taste better, that's a whole other story.
Interestingly, when I ran a search on Dasani, I found news stories dating back to 2004 about how the British weren't so accepting of Coke's attempts to pass off their own tap water on them. Guess they have better advertising guidelines...
Lastly, an article on Aquafina in Canada points out that, while the public could also use reverse osmosis methods, it's extremely wasteful, and twice as much water goes in as comes out (see blog entry from 7/25/07 about Harper's Index data).
